Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the three reverse modes?
"Reverse Both" reverses the video frames and the audio simultaneously. "Video Only" reverses the video frames but keeps the original audio playing forward — this creates an unusual effect where you hear normal sound over reversed visuals. "Audio Only" keeps the video playing forward while reversing only the audio track.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using FFmpeg WebAssembly. Your video file never leaves your device at any point.
Will reversing reduce video quality?
Reversing a video requires re-encoding because the frame order must change. Selecting CRF 18 produces near-lossless quality. CRF 23 is balanced and visually indistinguishable from the source for most content.
How does FFmpeg reverse a video?
For video, FFmpeg's reverse filter reads all frames into memory and outputs them in reverse order. For audio, the areverse filter does the same with audio samples. Both filters require the entire file to be buffered, which is why processing time increases with video length.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works on Android and iOS using Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. No app download is required. Note that very long videos may be slower on mobile due to device memory limits.

Free Online Video Reverser — Play Any Video Backwards in Your Browser

Our online video reverser lets you play any video file backwards — reversing the video frames, the audio, or both — processed entirely in your browser using FFmpeg WebAssembly. No uploads, no server processing, complete privacy.

How FFmpeg Reverses Video

The video reverse filter works by buffering all decoded frames in memory and then writing them out in reverse order. This is why very long or large videos take more time and memory to process compared to simple filters like crop or resize. For the audio track, the areverse filter applies the same approach to audio samples, producing audio that plays backwards.

Creative Uses for Reversed Video

Reversed video is widely used in creative editing — water flowing upward, objects reassembling, people walking backwards. Reversing audio while keeping video forward creates a surreal audio-visual contrast. Reversing both together produces the classic full rewind effect. All three modes are available in one tool with no re-uploading needed between exports.
